However, Benjamin brought up the issue at a hair show, where 60,000 hairstylists were in attendance, some of who specialize in styling the hair of African American women.
“I hate to use the word ‘excuse,’ but that’s one of them,” said Benjamin, as quoted by the New York Times. “We want to encourage people, and also give women the ability to look good and feel good and to be empowered about their own health.”
Almost half of black women over age 20 are overweight or obese, compared to 43 percent of Hispanic women and just 33 percent of white women, according to the government.
